Presidents, Groundhogs, and Circus preparation

This week we introduced the concept of "Presidents" as the leaders of "America." Thanks to family and friends all over the country, we alreadthis was a little more difficult to y have an early understanding of places outside of Manhattan that make up America. We also know about George Washington, the first president visible on the quarter and the dollar, and Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president visible on the penny and the five. See if they can remember "Obama"...that was a little trickier to remember. We also did these activities:

Math Centers:
  • sorting coins and completing coin rubbings
  • assessment of patterns and colors
  • practice one-to-one correspondence playing a "Cross the Red Sea" game
  • measure "how tall is Lincoln's hat" using pennies
  • practice skip counting by 5s
Lit Centers:
  • reading loft
  • assess pencil grip, name writing, and personal info
  • build sight words
  • stamp ABCs in order
  • make carousel horses to decorate for our circus
Other Activities:
  • American Flag Windsock
  • play "Follow the Leader"
  • Moses parting the Red Sea craft
  • Read sections of Don't know much about the Presidents
  • "planted" groundhogs and checked to see if they saw a shadow
  • graphed our groundhog shadow results
  • played "Groundhog, Groundhog, Shadow"
And finally, pictures!
