Sorry, no pictures from last week! I'll post new ones Friday, but here are the activities from our week:
Math Centers
- After matching color words to the correct coconut tree, students traced the color word using that color of crayon. This helped with color identification.
-Students examined the number next to a tree and added that number of coconuts to the tree. This helped with number recognition.
-Students identified shapes and attempted to draw them. They then played a matching game.
-Our letter "S" found socks in the estimation jar. How many socks were there?
-We wrote and counted letters in three students' names and made a graph.
Literacy Centers
-Coconut trees were labeled with capital letters and monkeys with lowercase. Students practiced letter recognition by matching each monkey to its capital.
-Letters A-J hid in our classroom in various colors. Students searched the room for our letter friends, colored their paper in the correct color, and attempted writing that letter.
-We made a class book based on "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" which found all of our students up a coconut tree. Peek at it on the table outside our classroom this next week.
-More time was spent looking at books and appreciating literacy in our reading loft.
-Students divided the alphabet into two categories: letters in my name and letters NOT in my name. This practiced letter recognition, name recognition, and scissor skills.
Bible Lessons
We had a lesson to correspond with each of our five senses: Saul HEARD a loud voice and he could no longer SEE; Jesus fed 5000 people (TASTE); Mary washed Jesus' feet with perfume (SMELL); Jacob tricked Isaac by pretending to be Esau (TOUCH).
Activities
-Sharing Day provided a wonderful opportunity for each of our students to share their personal interests and interact in front of a group. Please continue to encourage your children to remember when it is his/her turn to talk and when to be good listeners to friends/teachers. Thanks for your participation!
-Cups of scents were passed around our room and each student tried to guess the 10 different smells. Several students had great noses and were able to identify multiple scents! Our 10 smells included cinnamon, baby powder, mint, peanut butter, lemon juice, nutmeg, honey, BBQ sauce, garlic, and vanilla.
-We tested our sense of taste with a sweet and salty snack--oranges and pretzels. Yum!
-"Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" inspired us to make our own coconut trees. Check out our own name trees in the hall!
Songs
"Five Senses" (sung to BINGO)
There are five senses we all have
Can you guess what they are?
See, hear, taste, touch, smell.
See, hear, taste, touch, smell.
See, hear, taste, touch, smell.
And these are our five senses.
